FAQ:

  • What is the summer reading program?
    • The Summer Reading Program is an annual program hosted every Summer by public libraries across the US. Each year the CSLP designates an optional theme. The theme for 2024 is “Adventure Begins at your Library”. The purpose of the Summer Reading Program is to everyone engaged and reading over the summer months. It is also a great way to foster a love of reading, get involved with the community, and celebrate your local library.
    • For more information please visit:
  • When does the Summer Reading Program start?
    • You can register for the 2024 Summer Reading Program May 18th-July 20th. The program officially kicks off on June 1st.
  • How do I participate in the Summer Reading Program?
    • To participate, you must first register for the Summer Reading Program. To register, simply fill out the google form above, call the library at 865-494-6800, or come into the library to register in person.
    • Once registered, check the requirements for your age group. Note down on the reading log (see the above brochure) each time you finish a book or equivalent. Each age group will have different requirements.
    • Reading logs may be turned in during the Summer Reading Finale on July 20th and until end of business on August 3rd.
  • What are the age groups?
    • Age groups for the Summer Reading Program are:
      • Read to Me (Not reading independently)
      • Early Reader (Beginning to read independently)
      • Reader (Reading Independently)
      • Teen (Rising 6th through 12th grade)
      • Adult (18+)
  • How many books should I read?
    • Read to Me (Not reading independently) = 25
    • Early Reader (Beginning to read independently) = 15
    • Reader (Reading independently) = 10
    • Teen (Rising 6th-12th graders) = 3
    • Adult (18+) = 3
      • Stretch goal = 6
  • What books should I read?
    • Generally, you should pick something that is on your reading level. This is a personal choice. The goal is to read and enjoy yourself. Pick books or other materials that you want to read.
  • What counts as a book?
    • We’re not too picky! Books in the following formats are allowed:
      • physical (hardback/paperback/etc)
      • ebooks and audiobooks
      • Playaways
      • Manga/comics/graphic novels
    • What if it’s not a book?
      • That’s okay too! Magazines, articles, fanfiction, webcomics, and etc. all count. Just be mindful that the amount you’ve read is similar in size/time spent reading a novel at your reading level.
  • How do I get material to read?
    • We have several different ways for you to get books and other material:
      • Check out books from the library! We have a huge collection of physical books and materials.
      • Have you heard of Libby? Download the app on your smartphone or other compatible device, then connect your library card for access to thousands of different ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines.
      • You can, of course, purchase and read your own books. As librarians, we fully understand the siren call of a bookstore.
      • The Tennessee Electronic Library also has a ton of informational articles and other materials available to you for free.
      • Just a helpful hint for parents: books read during our storytime events by our Children’s Librarian can count towards your reading logs.
  • I’ve read the required amount. Now what?
    • Congratulations! We’re excited for how much reading you’ve done! If you have read the required amount for your age group, just keep reading! Reading logs can only be turned in during our Summer Reading Finale on July 20th and after. However, we love to get a total amount of things read over the Summer. The more we all read, the more our librarian hearts go pitter patter.
    • Reading Logs can be turned in during Summer Reading Finale on July 20th. We will accept your reading logs after that until end of business on August 3rd.
  • Do I get a prize?
    • YES! Prizes are determined by age group. To be eligible for a prize, you must turn in a completed reading log during the Summer Reading Finale or between July 20th-August 3rd. Participation in summer reading events also counts towards a special prize drawing at the end of the Summer Reading Program.

      • Read to Me, Early Reader, Reader, and Teens will receive: 1 book of choice from provided selection
      • Adults (18+) will receive: One item (tbd) plus one entry into a larger prize drawing
